Mon cuisine at Jana Mon
Charlotte Rose, Weekend editor and Mon food devotee
When a reader wrote to me earlier this year to say he’d discovered one of Yangon’s best new restaurants, I rolled my eyes. A small, unassuming restaurant tucked away down a small lane off Yar Tar Shay Street in Bahan,Jana Mon didn’t sound like anything special. How very wrong I was. The restaurant may not look like much from the outside, but it undoubtedly serves some of the tastiest, best value food in the city, and I’ve been back almost every week since my first visit six months ago. Every item on the small menu of Mon ethnic dishes has its own unique flavour: I recommend trying them all, but my favourites have to be the fiery minced beef with lemon grass and the delicious Mon country chicken with its distinctive hot and sour flavours. Visit at the weekend for their special coconut rice, and don’t forget to bring your own bottle if you want beer or wine. If this year was anything to go by there will no doubt be a wave of new openings in 2017, but it’s going to take a lot to replace Jana Mon as my favourite Yangon restaurant.
